How do I qualify for the In-Home Tutoring Program?

            The student must be in Elementary or High School and be in need of a tutor. The student must be from a low income family. Once the Tutoring-Aid Society application form is completed and returned to our office, we will review it to determine if the student qualifies. More people qualify for the In-Home Tutoring Program than we are able to accommodate because our funds are limited. 
Who is eligible for the In-Home Tutoring Program?

            Selected students in Elementary and High School are eligible to receive tutoring.  Students (their parents or guardians) must apply to Tutoring-Aid Society in order to be selected for the In-Home Tutoring Program. Students must be from low income families and be in need of tutoring to meet their educational goals. Not all qualified applicants are selected because of limited funds.

How do I apply for the In-Home Tutoring Program?

            You apply by either calling (604-730-3410) or emailing (tas@tutor.ca) the Tutoring-Aid Society and asking us to send you an application form, or by sending in the application form available on this website. The application form is straightforward, but does require that you include information on your family situation that helps to qualify you for TAS assistance. 

How do I qualify for the In-Home Tutoring Program?

How do you select your students?

            Students are selected by a review process. Staff review the applications to make sure they are properly filled in and that the student qualifies for tutoring assistance. A tutor must be available who can tutor the selected subject(s) at the right grade level.

How do you choose which tutors work with the students?

            The tutors are chosen according to the grades and subjects they teach and the geographical area in which they tutor, as well as their availability. We also take care to try to select a tutor who fits the student’s learning style.

What happens if I don’t like my tutor?

            In rare instances the teacher and student do not fit well together. In these cases Tutoring-Aid Society will talk to the parent and the tutor and, if need be, appoint a different tutor to the student.

What does the tutoring cost?

              Tutoring fees are covered by the Tutoring-Aid Society through generous donations made by our donors and grantors.  The family is expected to contribute $10/hour to the cost of the tutoring. 

How do I pay the tutor?

            You pay the tutor by cash or cheque at each tutoring session.

What if I can’t afford $10/hour?

            Please contact the Tutoring-Aid Society if you have been granted a place in the In-Home Tutoring Program and this situation applies to you.

When does the tutoring start?

            The tutoring usually starts the third week of the school year and continues through the first week of June. If the student is on the semester system the tutoring begins near the beginning of the semester and ends near the end.

How often does the tutoring take place?

Tutoring takes place once per week, at a time and day decided upon between the student’s family and the tutor.

How long are the lessons?

            Each tutoring session is one hour long, and takes place once per week.

What if I need to cancel the tutoring appointment?

            Your tutor requires 24 hours’ notice of cancellation if you must cancel the tutoring session, otherwise you will be charged for the tutoring session..

Does tutoring take place over the summer?

            No. There is no tutoring during the summer or during school holidays, such as Winter and Spring Break.

Where does the tutoring take place?

            The tutoring takes place in the student’s home. Other arrangements can be made, but are unusual.

What if my home isn’t suitable for tutoring?

            If your home isn’t suitable for tutoring other arrangements can be made, such as having the tutoring take place in a nearby library with public work space.

What is a Homework Club?

            Homework Clubs are clubs in schools where students receive after-school homework help from a qualified teacher in the school Library or Cafeteria. Tutoring-Aid Society sponsors and runs Homework Clubs in selected schools.

How are the schools for the Homework Clubs chosen?

            Homework clubs are assigned to schools which have a large percentage of lower income students. Tutoring-Aid Society works with Principals of selected schools to put Homework Clubs in place. These clubs are designed to take place after school twice per week to serve students in a formal setting.

How many Tutoring Program places are awarded each year?

            The number of Tutoring Program places awarded each year depends on the Tutoring-Aid Society budget, which is dependent upon the generosity of our donors and grantors.  and on the previous year’s TTS Teachers’ Tutoring Service earnings. 

Do adults qualify for the Tutoring Program?

            The Tutoring Program is aimed at Elementary and High School students. In rare cases adults in need of literacy tutoring may be give a place in the In-Home Tutoring Program.
